
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’ve got steam and moisture everywhere, and since water loves to carry electricity, a tiny leak in your insulation can lead to a short circuit or a nasty shock. To get this right, you have to be obsessive about how you seal everything. Stopping the leaks We use high-grade quartz glass for the heating elements because it’s a natural insulator. But here’s the thing: the glass isn’t where the trouble starts. The real danger is at the connection points. Steam settles on those terminals and creates a little “bridge” for the electricity to travel where it shouldn’t. We call this “tracking.” To stop it, we seal the end caps with ceramic insulators or high-temp silicone. It basically locks the electricity in place so it can’t crawl across a damp surface toward the metal frame. Also, make sure your housing is rated IP44 or better. That keeps the direct splashes out. I always suggest double-insulated cabling (Class II). That way, even if a wire frays, the outer shell keeps you safe. Grounding and the “small stuff” When you mount a heater on the ceiling, it’s sitting right above your head. That’s why we insist on a dedicated earth ground connected to the metal case. If something fails inside, the RCD (Residual Current Device) will trip instantly and kill the power before anyone gets hurt. And please, do yourself a favor: throw away the electrical tape. Standard tape just peels off once the room gets steamy. Use heat-shrink tubing with an adhesive lining for your splices. It melts into a permanent, airtight seal around the copper that actually stays put. The trade-off There is a catch, though. When you wrap everything in airtight seals to keep the moisture out, you’re also blocking the airflow. This means the inside of the unit runs hotter than it would in a dry room. Because of that, I set the thermal cut-off switches to trigger a few degrees earlier than usual. It’s a small adjustment, but it keeps the housing from warping when things get toasted inside.
